The small-batch distillery with a big community impact

5% of all rodham rye proceeds are donated to emily's list

The story of Republic Restoratives starts with a wild dream. Best friends Pia Carusone and Rachel Gardner dreamt of bringing DC a delicious bourbon that would unite people of all backgrounds to make cherished memories. With backgrounds in politics, media consulting, and sustainable natural resource development, Carusone and Gardner weren’t quite sure how to turn their dream into reality. They were sure, however, that they wanted their distillery to be centered around those who would enjoy its products and atmosphere: the local community.

In May 2015, Carusone and Gardner started an Indiegogo campaign calling on friends, family, neighbors, and all lovers of great spirits and cocktails to donate to help their dream come to life. Both women were blown away at the enthusiasm shown by the 680 campaign backers and the $119,000 they contributed- $44,000 more than their goal!

With this overwhelming community support, Republic Restoratives was able to open its doors to the public in May 2016 in Ivy City. Since then, DC locals and visitors alike have enjoyed sipping unique cocktails in Rr’s tasting room, aptly named the Ivy Room, as well as touring the distilling facilities where expert tour guides teach about the distilling process in a relaxed and lively way. Rr is committed to creating experiences where visitors feel as connected to Rr and their products as they do to each other. They seek to engage the community in a variety of ways from hosting the New York Ave Brunch Collab to tasting room takeovers to donating a percentage of profits to FRESHFARM Markets matching dollar program.

"Republic Restoratives stands for community, authenticity and most of all friendship. We believe that cocktails create community, and that you, our customers, are at the core of what we do and why we do it."

Small batches, big impact

Republic Restoratives is unique among DC distilleries for many significant reasons. It is:

Doing good all year round

Republic Restoratives strives to set an example of doing their civic duty by giving back not just during the holiday season, but all year round. One of the primary ways in which they do so is by donating 5% of all proceeds from Rodham Rye sales to EMILY's List- a national nonprofit dedicated to helping pro-choice Democratic women win political elections. Feeling both frustrated and motivated to take action after the 2016 presidential election, Republic Restoratives decided naming a whiskey after Hillary Clinton and contributing to EMILY's List would be one way in which they could help ignite positive change.

Republic Restoratives distills four delicious spirits—Borough Bourbon, Rodham Rye, Chapman's Apple Brandy, and Civic Vodka—on site and features them in cocktails mixed just for you in the Ivy Room.

Republic Restoratives hosts distillery tours open to the public every Saturday at 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm!

You can also contact the staff if you'd like to set up a distillery tour Monday-Friday.
